Review: The Return by Melissa Douthit

The Return (Book 3)
After the fall from the Maaldan cliff, Chalice is reunited with her friends on a journey that takes them to the coastline of Ielieria. Little do Vlaad and his Fierain know what is in store for them as, bit by bit, their plans are thwarted by this blond-haired, blue-eyed beauty.
The small band of rebels then travels across the Realm, preparing it for war, while Chalice herself is brewing plans of her own that may just land her in the hot seat. What will happen when she returns her father to the throne? What will happen when he finds out what she has done? And … what will happen once Dar’Maalda learns of the rebels’ location?
In the third and final novel of the trilogy, The Legend of the Raie’Chaelia, you find out. It is a dramatic finish to an epic story of action, adventure, betrayal, forgiveness and love.
My thoughts:
A fantastic finish for this great trilogy.  The author takes you along  on a wild ride of emotions, mystery and discovery for the final adventure with the characters that you have come to love in the first two books.
The writing is vivid and descriptive.  The characters are wonderful and the world building is detailed and carefully created.  The storyline is complex and well developed and the adventure is epic.
The stories build from book to book so I would recommend reading them in order - and I would definately recommend reading them.

It's Miss Evans!
I approach the tank and investigate it, looking for signs of movement from Miss Evans. She floats lifelessly in the water. Her hair flows, carried by the waves and her face appears angelic. I notice the softness of her eyelids and the elegant curve of her mouth as she floats. But the beautiful view is interrupted by a dramatic jolt of her body as her eyes open and a cluster of bubbles escape her mouth and nose. She stares at me and thrashes, eyes bloodshot as she slaps at the glass. I gaze back at her powerless, examining the tank for locks or levers; some way to release her from the watery prison.
I'm helpless as she continues to struggle for air. Then, an image flickers from the corner of my eye as a side door opens and Maxwell walks out, holding a staff of his own.
"Maxwell," I plead. "It's Miss Evans. Please help her!"
He shakes his head and lifts his staff in his hands, twirling it in a circle as he begins to slowly walk sideways, circling me like a predator, encasing me in a hedge of danger.
"Hold your ground. Make a choice: fight or flight," Maxwell bellows.
Miss Evans' banging on the glass behind me blends with the pounding of my heart. I lift my staff and spread my feet, turning my attention to Maxwell. As much as I'm afraid for my own safety, I find it impossible not to focus on Miss Evans. Her muffled scream comes from the tank and I look away from Maxwell to check on her. Her hands clutch her neck. Her face is bright red with a tinge of blue around her lips.
"No," I scream, stepping back away from the tank.
Raising my staff above my head, I crank back and rip it down, slamming it into the side of the tank, as I yell. The water explodes from the crack in the tank and glass shards crash to the floor below. I swing once more and this time the entire tank shatters, launching Miss Evans into the air toward me. I catch her in my arms and the force of the water propels us backward onto the floor. She coughs, gasping for air. I hold her in my arms and caress her head. Her sobbing brittles me and I'm relieved to see her skin color returning to its natural tanned shade.
We're here, an odd place, an unfamiliar place. But as I hold her delicately in my arms, it makes me feel like I'm heading back home. Not the place where I live now, but the place where I used to live, when mom and dad were still alive. The way she rests in my arms beckons me to a time when I used to hold my kitten, Priceless. She'd climb into my lap during the thunder storms. I was her comforter. Priceless would purr when I did it. And now, so many years later, I find myself feeling the same way as I hold Miss Evans. Her soft body pressing into my skin—warming me—calls me to hug her even closer with each passing second. The times when I needed someone to hold me reflect in my mind like a mirror as I stare at her. Her chest rises as her heart beat quickens, mixing evenly with her breaths. As warmth returns to her body, a subtle tremor comes over her; like a purr.
I can't resist. I have to do it. I must do it. I hug deeply, ignoring the senseless urge to pull away.
"Bravo!" praises Maxwell, exiting the room as the lights come back on.

Miss Evans resting in my arms and I comfort her, caressing her hair. She finally looks up at me and mouths, "Thank you."

 Book Description:

“Her hands began to shake as she looked down wide-eyed at the blood-soaked cotton that covered her.”

London emerges from the Blitz, and every corner of the city bears the scars. In the East End—a corner fairing worse than most—thirteen year-old Beth Wade endures this new way of life with her adoptive family. She also suffers the prejudice against her appearance, an abiding loneliness and now the trials of adolescence. But with this new burden comes a persisting fatigue and an unquenchable thirst that ultimately steals her into unconsciousness . . .

What happens next is the start of something Beth will fear more than the war itself. She begins to change in ways that can’t be explained by her coming-of-age, none more frightening than her need to consume blood. The family who took her in and the former best friend who’s taken refuge in their house can never know. Aware of the danger she poses to everyone around her, Beth has never felt more alone. But someone else knows Beth’s secret . . . someone who understands just how different she really is. He alone can decrypt her past and explain her future. But he’s been sworn to destroy her kind, and as Beth grows ever more dangerous, he’s forced to take sides.

Can Beth keep all of the secrets? Can she trust a man sworn to kill her? And can she stop the vampire within from taking her humanity?

Short Excerpt:

Beth breathed furiously. She was exhausted, but the air she breathed had a new scent to it. It stopped her short. Her insides jumped in excitement at the rusty metallic scent. Her jaw twitched and her body flinched. She spun her head around, toward the aroma. Oliver had felt his way back to the uneven wall and leant against it cradling his arm. He sobbed and whimpered, while looking aimlessly at it. Beth could see what he couldn’t: a jagged edge of bone poking out from his forearm. He was slightly sheltered under the broken floorboards above him, and the rain wasn’t washing away the blood that now oozed freely. Beth didn’t need to see everything. She could smell it.
Beautiful, delicious, unparalleled and unbeatable human blood.
Her head tipped forward. Her nose flared involuntarily and her lips snarled into a sadistic smile. She felt the four pointed canines being pushed out; unsheathed. The tip of her tongue curled under one of the two fangs that slid down. Her heart deafened the rain and the approaching bombers. Almost subconsciously, she lowered herself into a half-crouch, ready to pounce, and though her nails were trimmed short, her fingers curled into claws. She couldn’t even feel the hole in her palm any more. She felt nothing at all except raging bloodlust. Her brother leant there sobbing, oblivious to the bloodthirsty creature no more than a yard away that wanted nothing more than to cover everything with his precious life force. To swim in his blood.
Beth could almost taste it.

Welcome to The Wormhole and my stop on the tour.
It is my pleasure to feature Marianne Morea
and Hollow's End.

About the Author:
I'm a New Yorker, born and bred, and for the most part my stories and my characters embody the grit and complexity of the city. An avid traveler, I use my experiences from around the world in all my books. There isn't a place my characters live or travel to that I haven't been myself.
Like most authors, my love affair with the written word started as a child with the books I read. Even today, I love to read almost as much as I love to write. My favorite stories are the ones that transport me, that bring me to places and introduce me to characters that leave me breathless...the ones that spark the fire of my imagination, allowing me to dream in the world of 'what if?'

I've always been a scribbler, and from the time I could write my name I've been making up stories. So it was no surprise when I earned degrees in both Journalism and Fine Art, but after working in the trenches of Madison Avenue as a Graphic Artist, I decided to do what I love most full time. Write.

In the meantime I am also a founding member and former President of The Paranormal Romance Guild, a not-for-profit organization for readers and authors of the genre...and when I'm not 'bichok' (but in a chair hands on keyboard), I'm spending time with my husband and our three kids, traveling to exciting, romantic places ...for inspiration, of course!

Hollow’s End
The Legend Series
Book One
Marianne Morea

Genre: YA paranormal romance/ horror
Publisher: Coventry Press, Ltd
Number of pages: 242

Book Description:

The dark water of the Hudson River isn’t the only blackness looming in the distance of the quaint river town of Sleepy Hollow. Two hundred years of secrets and lies are bleeding into the present, and high school seniors, Hunter Morrissey and Rowen Corbett, find themselves linked with unseen forces shrouded in mystery and violence.

Truths, buried and long forgotten, have risen at a time when the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest. Only Hunter and Rowen hold the key to locking the past in the past, and setting old wrongs to right. Can justice be served? Can the two find a way to straddle both worlds and solve the mystery when they don’t understand the clues?

Inspired by historical events that surround the village of Sleepy Hollow and the famous legend that shares its name, this Young Adult Horror takes you on a journey full of history and suspense with a splash of romance and the paranormal.

"He’s coming! He’s coming!" one of his soldiers cried, running past the crude tents. The devil himself on his heels. The sound of the black horse, its hooves tearing into the loamy earth, echoed through the forest. The ominous herald announcing its rider’s approach—the Angel of Death.
Both man and beast found nothing but agony waiting at the end of the man’s sword. Slaughter and brutality his hallmark. He wielded them well.
His men fled, stomachs roiling with fear. The knowledge they had assisted his butchery, complying in mute terror, afraid to raise their eyes to his lest they be next, clear on each countenance. He swore he’d ride them to hell and back, their scalps hanging from his saddle, dripping bloody as tokens for the gods of war if they defied him. They would never be free...

Dysus Dreamer by J.A. Garland

Amazon Product Description:
Demon warrior, Slade Aesus, is determined to destroy the werewolves controlling his cousin. But a beautiful elf, consumed by her own vengeance, finds the wolves first. Botching her assassination attempt, Annwyn has the most powerful Packs in the world biting at her heels. Both fiercely independent, can the two join forces long enough to fulfill their missions and stay alive?

My thoughts:
I am halfway through the book.  The characters are fantastic - original, distinctive and well made.  The story is multi-faceted and interesting.  It is nicely paced and entertaining.  I am both dreading and looking forward to the ending - wanting to know the answers, yet not really wanting the story to end.

More thoughts upon finishing the book:
I enjoyed the ride this book takes the reader on.  There were moments when I had trouble following along, but perhaps that originates from reading book 2 before reading book one.  I liked the Annwyn/Slade relationship and complications.  They are both incredible characters.  I am hoping that we continue to learn more in the next installment.  I will be reading book one in anticipation of catching up on everything while I await book 3.

Book Description:

Who knew one night could change life forever? But, witnessing a creature with glowing red eyes kidnap her best friend, definitely qualifies as life altering to Erika Stanton. The stubborn college student vows to find her roommate even if it kills her.

Zaid, an immortal, is roused in the middle of the night by a human woman's nightmares of the rogue he's been tracking. The stubborn mortal insists on poking her nose where it doesn't belong -the middle of an immortal battle. He has no intention of allowing Erika to die trying to find her college roomie, especially after realizing Erika is his soul mate.

Will he be able to help Erika? Or will he lose the only woman he could ever truly love?

“You love her.”  Zaid pinched the bridge of his nose as if trying to fight the internal struggle within himself just as his brother Kason makes his way up the stairs to join them.
“Loves who?”
Great this was just what Zaid needed.  He walked into his bedroom with both of his brothers on his heel.
“Seriously Z, what is Calix talking about?”
Zaid turned toward his brothers.  “I don’t love her!  I don’t.”  If immortals could get headaches he was sure he’d have the migraine from hell right about now.
Calix turned toward Kason, ignoring Zaid altogether.  “It seems as though our brother has fallen in love with that girl we mentioned earlier.”
“I don’t love her!”
“Oh shit!  Zaid, you can’t fall for a mortal.”
Zaid growled again.  “I don’t love her!”
Calix laughed.  “Zaid’s got it bad bro.  Seriously look at him.  He’s a mess.  Plus he told her everything.”
Kason stepped toward Zaid.  “You told her?  Why not just wipe her memory and be done with it all?”
“Because he loves her you idiot!  Did you not hear me the first time?”
“Shit.”  Both Kason and Zaid said at the same time.  Zaid sat on his bed with his head in his hands unable to process what Calix just spit out.
“I don’t love her.  I don’t love her.”  He kept repeating it over and over.
Calix sat down next to his brother and slapped his hand against his back.  “Brother, you can keep repeating that until you are blue in the face.” Zaid eyed him questionably.  “It’s just a saying.  Anyway, you can keep saying that but it’s not going to help.  I can see it all over your face.  You love her.  You might as well stop denying it.”
Kason walked up to join his brothers.  “She’s mortal Calix.”
“And?  Our father loved a mortal.  Hell, she could even be turned if she wanted.”
Zaid finally hit his limit.  “Enough!  Both of you!  I’ll figure it out on my own!  Right now all I want to do is shower and sleep the day away before going to see Erika again and helping her find Kaley.”
Both the brothers jumped up off the bed.  “Whoa, you’re going to help her find Kaley?  What the hell bro?”  Zaid could always count on Kason for support.
“She is more determined than ever to find Kaley so I offered to help.  It’s the only way to keep her from harm.”
Kason threw his hands in the air in exasperation and walked out the bedroom door.  Once Calix heard the TV resume he placed his hand on Zaid’s shoulder.  “I’m here for you brother.  It will be okay.”
“Thanks brother.”
Zaid stood to make his way to his bathroom as Calix made his way back to the door but before he walked into the hallway he turned toward Zaid, “By the way brother, we found out the name of the rogue that took her, the one you have been after all this time.”
That got Zaid’s attention.  He immediately spun his head around to face Calix.
“His name is Thaddeus.”  With the click of the door shutting Zaid had the name of the rogue he had been after all this time.

My Thoughts:
Zaid is an incredible character! The man we all dream of actually finding.  Erika is an interesting character, I liked that she got tough and learned so much about taking care of herself.

I really liked the heartfelt emotions and the closeness of the groups.  Zaid's background - the relationship between his parents - is wonderfully done.

The rogue immortal idea is a nice touch.  Original and creative.  The story is fast paced because it is so short, I found myself wishing that the story could have been longer so that the great characters and creativity would have had an opportunity to be fleshed out.  I am hoping that there will be a sequel.
